canstruction

We live in Ohio. Construction is just about one of our regular seasons. Canstruction, on the other hand, is a lot more rare. And I don’t see why, honestly, because it turned out some really cool projects for an even more awesome cause.

Over at the Massillon Museum last week, there was an opening gala for their first Canstruction competition. I say first, because it’s apparently a pretty large nationwide project. Teams gather together to build sculptures entirely out of canned food, with the result of creative (and potentially delicious) works of art. Beyond that, the cans will be donated to local foodbanks after the competition, as well as the one-can admittance fee to get in. Great stuff.

The gala itself was a lot of fun, too, with food (not canned) donated by Fisher Foods and a steel drum band (because they are cans). I was even witness to the great Canstruction dance.

The competition was pretty stiff, but there were some inventive engineers in the groups. My personal favorite was Money Can Do, which used the labels and angles to create the image of an open billfold.

Thanks to the museum for the photo, incidentally.

The exhibit will be up for a few weeks, so check it out (as well as all the other cool stuff they have on display there)!
